Chinese Seek to Buy a U.S. Maker of Disk Drives

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 24 — A Chinese technology company has expressed interest in buying a maker of computer disk drives in the United States, raising concerns among American government officials about the risks to national security in transferring high technology to China.

The overture, which was disclosed by the chief executive of one of the two remaining drive makers in the United States, William D. Watkins of Seagate Technology, has resurrected the issues of economic competitiveness and national security raised three years ago when Lenovo, a Chinese computer maker, bought I.B.M.’s personal computer business.

Tensions have been increasing lately between the countries over China’s ambitions in developing its military abilities and advanced technologies for industrial and consumer uses.

Although disk drives do not fall under a list of export-controlled technologies, the attempted purchase of an American disk drive company would require a security review by the federal government, according to several government officials.

In recent years, modern disk drives, used to store vast quantities of digital information securely, have become complex computing systems, complete with hundreds of thousands of lines of software that are used to ensure the integrity of data and to offer data encryption.

That could raise the prospect of secret tampering with hardware or software to make it possible to pilfer information via computer networks, intelligence officials have warned.

Seagate has recently begun selling drives with hardware encryption abilities.

Mr. Watkins did not identify the Chinese company. But he said that the possibility of an acquisition had sent alarm bells ringing at some government agencies.

“The U.S. government is freaking out,” Mr. Watkins said during an interview on Thursday.

Reached Friday night, Treasury officials declined to comment on possible Chinese overtures for an American maker.

While Mr. Watkins said that Seagate, which is the largest drive maker in the United States, was not for sale, he also said that if a high enough premium was offered to shareholders it would be difficult to stop.

Seagate’s shares rose 1.05 percent Friday to close at $24.96 and were up about 4 percent for the week after news that it might enter the flash memory market. There does not appear to have been any significant increase in trading of Seagate options.

With a booming economy and $1.33 trillion in foreign-exchange reserves, Chinese companies are in a position to acquire American companies, as Japanese and West European companies were several decades ago. While those earlier acquisitions were often opposed out of fears that they would damage American economic competitiveness, the acquisition of American companies by Chinese companies is regarded with more suspicion, particularly in the high-tech sector.

Since the Lenovo sale, the government has become increasingly concerned about technology security, according to members of federal advisory committees.

“Seagate would be extremely sensitive,” said an industry executive who participates in classified government advisory groups. “I do not think anyone in the U.S. wants the Chinese to have access to the controller chips for a disk drive. One never knows what the Chinese could do to instrument the drive.”

The transfer of advanced disk drive manufacturing technology would give the Chinese a major leg up in competing in information technologies. China, however, still lags in basic manufacturing skills like semiconductor design and manufacturing.

“This is clearly a critical component of a computer system and the purchase by the Chinese or other nations merits a full review to determine what our risks are,” said Michael R. Wessell, a commissioner of the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, a group that monitors the national security implications of trade with China for Congress.

I.B.M., which invented the disk drive in the 1950s and which dominated the industry through the 1990s, sold its disk drive business to the Japanese computer maker Hitachi in 2002, leaving just two American companies: Seagate, based in Scotts Valley, Calif., and Western Digital, based in Lake Forest, Calif.

Two other Japanese makers, Fujitsu and Toshiba, and a division of Samsung, a South Korean electronics conglomerate, are also major manufacturers of the storage devices.

Western Digital executives declined to comment.

Kenneth Lieberthal, the senior director for Asia at the National Security Council during the later years of the Clinton administration, expressed strong doubt that the Chinese government would allow a technology company to pursue an acquisition if the transaction were likely to draw criticism from the United States government, even if that criticism did not reach the level of an actual prohibition on a deal.

“The Chinese have been very concerned about how to invest in the United States without producing the kind of political firestorm they ran into when they tried to buy Unocal,” said Mr. Lieberthal, a professor of politics and business administration at the University of Michigan. “The government really does not want to confront the kind of situation it ran into with Unocal.”

It was back at this year's CeBit tradeshow when we came across the reintroduction of the Commodore brand, and this was probably one use most akin to the heart of the name without having to suffer the cut throat market that is the modern day console war. Instead, by offering a gaming PC and riding on the brand that Commodore made for itself, it puts the company in a good position to take on the likes of Dell and Alienware when offering the complete kit for those that want something a little different.

The available options have changed quite a bit from when we first saw them; now, partly thanks to the recent Intel price cuts, the quad-core Q6600 is the minimum you can buy across the entire range. There is not a single AMD machine in sight at the moment, meaning that there is nothing available for the budding AMD enthusiast. The lowest graphical option is also an Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB as well, which means DirectX 10 support is guaranteed from the bottom up, but there are no ATI cards are included - does Commodore not like the new AMD/ATI then?

We asked the same question to Commodore's representatives, and this was what we were told: "Our aim is to offer the best technology and products for our customers. We feel that Intel and Nvidia are the leaders for the moment but we have good relationships with AMD and certainly remain open to the possibility of offering their products in the future."

Although the XX will in this configuration will set you back around £2,750, the "low-end" G configuration is just a shade over £1,000 and looks just as enticing, with the same case and looks but without the heavy price tag.

But is 50 Commodore games and a few logos slapped to a case worth the near £3,000 investment? Or would your money be better spent on the likes of a jet engined Dell XPS and half an hour on the Internets, plugging in "Commodore emulator" into Google.

And It seems that's exactly what ~~Commodore~~ ClickGamer did! We tried out a few ROMs from the CD and to our surprise (and mild amusement) there were 'scene' messages throughout: the one above was more tame than others. Incidentally there's a disclaimer at the end of the CD insert warning that because some of the games are over 15 years old, the originals were not available so "other" sources were required.

Nuclear medicine is a branch of medicine and medical imaging that uses the nuclear properties of matter in diagnosis and therapy. That's a long way to come after such a modest beginning...

May 1886	-	Pemberton concocted a caramel-colored syrup in a three-legged brass kettle in his backyard. He first "distributed" the new product by carrying Coca-Cola in a jug down the street to Jacobs Pharmacy. For five cents, consumers could enjoy a glass of Coca-Cola at the soda fountain. Whether by design or accident, carbonated water was teamed with the new syrup, producing a drink that was proclaimed "Delicious and Refreshing." Dr. Pemberton's partner and bookkeeper, Frank M. Robinson, suggested the name and penned, in the unique flowing script that is famous worldwide today, "".
1886	-	Sales of Coca-Cola averaged nine drinks per day. That first year, Dr. Pemberton sold 25 gallons of syrup, shipped in bright red wooden kegs. Red has been a distinctive color associated with the No. 1 soft drink brand ever since.

The new formula was a sweeter variation with less tang, it was also slightly smoother. Robert Woodruff's death was a large contributor to the change because he stated that he would never change Coca-Cola's formula. Another factor that influenced the change was that Coke's market share fell 2.5 percent in four years. Each percentage point lost or gain meant 200 million dollars. This was the first flavor change since the existence of the Coca-Cola company. The change was announced April 23, 1985 at the Vivian Beaumont Theater at the Lincoln Center. Some two hundred TV and newspaper reporters attended this very glitzy announcement. It included a question and answer session, and a history of Coca-Cola. The debut was accompanied by an advertising campaign that revived the Coca-Cola theme song of the early 1970s, "I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke" The change to the world's best selling soft drink was heard by 81 percent of the United States population within twenty-four hours of the announcement. Within a week of the change, one thousand calls a day were flooding the company's eight hundred number. Most of the callers were shocked and/or outraged, many said that they were considering switching to Pepsi. Within six weeks, the eight hundred number was being jammed by six thousand calls a day. The company also fielded over forty thousand letters, which were all answered and each person got a coupon for the new Coke. Many American consumers of Coca-Cola asked if they would have the final say. When Pepsi heard that the Coca-Cola company was changing its secret formula they said that it was a decision that Pepsi tastes better. Roger Enrico, the president and CEO of Pepsi-Cola wrote a letter to every major newspaper in the U.S. to declare the victory. Coca-Cola management had to decide: Do nothing or "buy the world a new Coke". They decided to develop the new formula.
1985	-	July 10, eighty-seven days after the new Coke was introduced, the old Coke was brought back in addition to the new one. This was greatly due to dropping market share and consumer protest. The market share fell from a high of 15 percent to a low of 1.4 percent. This was said to be a classic marketing retreat. Coca-Cola executives admitted that they had goofed by taking the old Coke off the market. The Coca-Cola company's eight hundred number received eighteen thousand calls of gratitude. The foundations for what was to become one of the world's biggest electronics companies were laid in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, in 1891.

Philips began by making carbon-filament lamps and, by the turn of the century, was one of the largest producers in Europe. As developments in new lighting technologies fueled a steady program of expansion, in 1914 it established a research laboratory to study physical and chemical phenomena and stimulate product innovation.

In 1918, it introduced a medical X-ray tube. This marked the beginning of the diversification of its product range and the moment when it began to protect its innovations with patents in areas stretching from X-ray radiation to radio reception.

In 1925, Philips became involved in the first experiments in television in 1925 and, in 1927, began producing radios; by 1932, it had sold one million of them. A year later, it produced its 100-millionth radio valve and started production of medical X-ray equipment in the United States. By 1939, when it launched the first Philips electric shaver, the company employed 45,000 people worldwide.

Science and technology underwent tremendous development in the 1940s and 1950s, with Philips Research inventing the rotary heads that led to the development of the Philishave electric shaver, and laying down the basis for later ground-breaking work in transistors and integrated circuits. The company also made major contributions to the development of the recording, transmission and reproduction of television pictures. In 1963, it introduced the Compact Audio Cassette. In 1965, it produced its first integrated circuits.

The flow of exciting new products and ideas continued throughout the 1970s. Research in lighting contributed to the new PL and SL energy-saving lamps, while Philips Research made key breakthroughs in the processing, storage and transmission of images, sound and data. These led to the inventions of the LaserVision optical disc, the Compact Disc and optical telecommunication systems.

In 1972, the company established PolyGram, the enormously successful music recording label. In 1974, it acquired Magnavox and in 1975, Signetic, both in the United States. Acquisitions in the 1980s included GTE Sylvania's television concern and Westinghouse's lamps business. Then, in 1983, came a technological landmark: the launch of the Compact Disc. Other milestones of the time included the production of Philips' 100-millionth TV set in 1984 and, in 1995, the 300-millionth Philishave electric shaver.

The 1990s was a decade of significant change for Philips. The company carried out a major restructuring program to return it to a healthy footing, simplifying its structure and reducing the number of business areas. In 1997, in cooperation with several other companies - and building on the success of its Compact Disc technology (invented by Philips and jointly introduced with Sony) - it released what proved to be the fastest growing home electronics product in history: the DVD.

Moving into the 21st century, Philips has continued to change and grow. Long aware that for many people it is no more than a consumer electronics producer, it has dedicated itself to projecting a new and more representative image that reflects the products it offers in the areas of Healthcare, Lifestyle and Technology. On July 5, 1907, Royal Dutch Shell’s corporate forefathers went to the notary to sign the official declaration for what at the time was a rather unique event: the coming together of two companies in two different countries, Royal Dutch and Shell Transport and Trading.

Looking back over 100 years of history, it’s been an amazing journey. Mankind has managed to adapt, time and time again, through a century of rapid change and periodic upheaval. So has Shell.

In 1907 the world swarmed with oil companies, all full of ambitions to grow. Over the next 100 years many of them saw those ambitions shattered as events galloped forward and they failed to keep up. Little wonder, really, given everything the planet has gone through in the past century: two world wars, the spread and then decline of communism, deep economic recessions, de-colonisation, the rise of a cartel of oil-exporting countries, the use of oil as a political weapon, rocketing growth in energy consumption, mass mobility, accelerating globalisation, and more.

There are big challenges in the century ahead, as well. Shell and other energy companies must find more energy to help keep the world’s economy humming, as places like China and India expand at a rapid clip. And they must do so in ways that safeguard society and the environment.

It started with fire. It was a time when a national passion burned for invention, for doing a better job, for creating a better world. One of the foremost keepers of that new industrial flame, ironically, was an Ohio farm boy. Even his name, Firestone, evoked the burning spirit of the new age.

Harvey S. Firestone was one of three men who epitomized the spirit of a nation awakening to its potential and who changed America. Firestone, along with friends Henry Ford and Thomas Edison, took annual camping trips where ideas were shared to pull the world out of its horse-and-buggy pace and thrust it into an era of speed.

As the new century arrived, Firestone was convinced automobiles were the future. In 1900, he moved to Akron, Ohio, which was soon to become the rubber capital of the world, and began manufacturing his own tires in a small old foundry. In just six years, sales of Firestone tires surpassed $1 million.

As the demand for tires grew, Firestone set the pace with innovations that included the pneumatic tire, an improvement over the difficult-to-mount clinchers then in use; the demountable rim, which for the first time made it easy for drivers to change their own tires; the first angular non-skid tread, which made automobiles easier to control; the gum-dipping process, which guarded against heat build-up; and the first successful set of low-pressure balloon tires that allowed cars to travel at faster speeds with greater safety and comfort.

In 1911, the first Indy 500® was held and Firestone tires were on the winning car. Since then, Firestone-equipped racers have maintained a strong presence in the Sunday races. From 1920 through 1966, every winner at the Indy 500® had one thing in common - Firestone tires.

Firestone became a household name as the company continued to grow and make its mark on the country. People began shopping at Firestone one-stop service centers that sold not only tires, but car service and batteries. Within 13 years of opening the first store, the Firestone network of stores grew to 575 and offered 2,200 different items. In homes across America, people tuned in each week to hear the "Voice of Firestone" radio program that started in 1928 and ran for the next 36 years. And, Americans followed the footsteps of Harvey Firestone as he championed the drive to improve the infrastructure of the country with modern highways and better roads.

As the century began to draw to a close, the company, which had long held a strong international presence, began looking for an international partner to help it compete more effectively on a global scale. In 1988, the Bridgestone Corporation of Japan purchased the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. It was the largest investment ever of a Japanese company in an American company.

At first glance, it might appear the two companies sprang from divergent roots, but in more ways than one, they are remarkably similar.

At the same time Firestone was becoming established in America in the early 1900s, a young man named Shojiro Ishibashi purchased a Studebaker in 1912, using it in his family business.

Ishibashi later became president of Nihon Tabi Company, and purchased the development of a tire manufacturing operation--the first successful tire was finished April 9, 1930. The following year, Ishibashi founded the Bridgestone Tire Company, Ltd.

Since there was a strong preference at the time for imported products, Ishibashi took the direct English translation of his family name (which means "stone bridge"), and reversed it to form the name "Bridgestone." The resulting name had an English sound that might appeal more to the Japanese public. Ishibashi instilled in his employees a relentless insistence on superior products which echoed the philosophy of Firestone.

The merger created a truly new global company that brought Firestone's manufacturing capabilities and production operations to Bridgestone. The merger positioned the company to sell tires internationally and leveraged technological advances that included UNI-T®, which improves tire traction on wet surfaces, and UNI-T AQ™, which keeps performance at optimum levels even as tires wear.

In 1995, the Firestone name returned to Indy racing after an absence of more than two decades and soon reclaimed some familiar territory - the winner's circle.

A decade after the two companies merged, sales and net earnings of Bridgestone/Firestone have reached all-time highs.

Bridgestone/Firestone has entered the new century just as it began - with fire: to continually innovate, to offer the best, to win the race and to make the lives of people safer and easier. Harvey S. Firestone would have been proud.

Originally called Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Company), Sony’s roots go back over half a century to 1946 when it was founded by Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita. In the crippled post-war Japanese economy Ibuka and Morita made their living repairing radios and manufacturing small numbers of voltmeters whilst looking to develop a future in designing and manufacturing new electronics. Perhaps surprisingly, their first electronic innovation was an automatic rice cooker. Its success was limited but it was the first in a long line of innovations which continue today.

Ibuka and Morita were global thinkers. They realised the need for a global brand which crossed cultural and language borders in order to expand the business in the US and later Europe. TTK was already being used by another company so a new name, Sony, was conceived. The name Sony derives from the Latin word sonus meaning sound and the English word sonny-boy - a term used by the Americans in the 1950's to denote a bright youngster.

Although the name of the company was not officially changed to Sony Corporation until 1958, the first Sony branded product was the TR-55 transistor radio which went on sale in 1955. This was shortly followed by Sony’s world first "pocketable" transistor radio. Sony’s UK history began in 1968 when Sony United Kingdom was founded in London. Six years later Sony became the first major Japanese company to open a factory in the UK. Today there are two factories, both in Wales, at Bridgend and Pencoed, which between them manufacture broadcast cameras, television sets and components for the UK and export to other countries around the world. Indeed, Sony was awarded the prestigious Queens Award for Export on four occasions in the 80s and 90s. Today Sony UK employs around 4,500 people in functions including Manufacturing, Sales and Marketing. Sony’s UK Headquarters are located at Brooklands, near Weybridge, in Surrey, on the site of the old Brooklands Racing Circuit, just inside the M25.

The story of Duracell begins in the early 1920's with an inventive scientist named Samuel Ruben and an eager manufacturer of tungsten filament wire named Philip Rogers Mallory. Ruben came to the P.R. Mallory Company seeking a piece of equipment he needed for an experiment. But Ruben and Mallory saw an opportunity: uniting the one's inventive genius with the other's manufacturing muscle. Their partnership, which would last until 1975 with Mallory's death, was the bedrock of Duracell International.

Samuel Ruben's inventions revolutionized battery technology. Amidst World War II, for instance, Ruben devised the mercury cell, which packed more capacity in less space and was durable enough for the harsh climates of wartime theaters like North Africa and the South Pacific — places where ordinary zinc carbon batteries used in flashlights, mine detectors, and walkie-talkies couldn't hold up. P.R. Mallory manufactured millions of mercury cells for the war effort. The Mallory Battery Company was formed shortly thereafter.

In the 1950's, Samuel Ruben went on to improve the alkaline manganese battery, making it more compact, durable, and longer lasting than anything before it. At about the same time, Eastman Kodak introduced cameras with a built-in flash unit that required more power than zinc carbon cells could provide. The cameras needed alkaline manganese cells but in a new size, the AAA. Mallory made them, and also licensed the technology to others because the company, at that time, had no consumer distribution.

The photographic demand for power put alkaline cells on the map — and the DURACELL brand was introduced in 1964. Soon, the consumer market for DURACELL batteries rocketed and supplies had to be rationed in the 1970's as manufacturing capacity caught up.

Today, Duracell is the world's leading producer of high-performance alkaline batteries. The tradition of innovation started by Ruben and Mallory is still evident in new DURACELL batteries such as DURACELL ULTRA with M3 Technology. NNI Research Centers

A highly significant impact of the NNI has been the focused investment by the NNI-participating agencies in the establishment and development of multidisciplinary research and education centers devoted to nanoscience and nanotechnology. NNI agencies have developed an extensive infrastructure of over 80 major interdisciplinary research and education centers and user facilities across the country. Many such centers, with state of the art equipment for nanoscale S&T research, are designated as user facilities and are available to researchers from academia and the private sector, and to scientists at the national laboratories.

NNI Centers and Networks of Excellence

Government funds for nanotechnology research have created some of the most sophisticated nanoscience laboratories in the world. In addition to providing the facilities, the National Nanotechnology Initiative also has created programs to attract researchers across an array of disciplines and to facilitate discoveries.
